An QNAP - Was würdet ihr besser machen?

  • Liebe QNAPclub Mitglieder,

Container Station - What are some common user scenarios for NAS user to need/use Container Station?

    - ubiquiti and squeezebox server

Notes Station 3 & Qnotes 3 - What are the improvements in Notes Station 3 that most of the users want to have?

    - easy to use backup function for database

Danke vorab an alle Helferlein :)

  • Photo Station -

What is the main reason for the users to use Photo Station? (For example, browsing photos with families, managing private photos, sharing photos to customers, etc.):

    - assembling private albums out of a mass of folder-wise organized photos, for:

    - streaming to local TV or smartphone

    - downloading albums to local PC (for development)

    - photo station can be installed to encrypted volumes (in contrast to DSM)

Photo Station - Do users usually use "Folder" view in Photo Station? When do they need to use "Folder" view?

    - yes, I do: all my photos are well organized in folders, one folder per event; but they are too much, that's why I need albums

Photo Station - Do users who usually organize photos with folders also want to use facial recognition or other AI features (location and things recognition)?

    - yes, of course: Folder organization must always be accoring to the incoming events: new photos = new folder! Therefore you need features like "show me my dog" to arrange albums

Photo Station - When do users want to use Gallery Mode? What is the context?

    - i don't use apple like gallery modes - i need thumbnails. So QNAP Gallery Mode is great to overview photos. I'd like to gather albums by picking photos out of the gallery view (one gallery per folder, e.g.).

Photo Station - Do users want location albums or map view (based on image GPS information to create automatically)?

    - searching based on location (and date) to assemble albums is more important than smart albums

    - showing an album as a track on a map is a great feature, of course

    - I would not use the location feature, if location data leaves my home, e.g. if the map data is downloaded on the fly

Storage & Snapshot - What is the top 3 reasons you saw new users considering buying a NAS, and more specified a QNAP NAS?

    - Prio1: Data robustness - currently not given, that's why I don't recommend to buy QNAP

    - Prio2: Data compatibility - because of proprietary LVM2 and ext4 patches I currently don't recommend to buy QNAP

    - Prio3: "nearly" full volume encryption, incl. medias: That is only supported by QNAP, that's why I stay at QNAP and recommend it

Storage & Snapshot - What function in storage & snapshot did you saw that forum users had surprise (postive) or pain (negative) with?

    - Positive: Easy configuration of sanity checks (Drive Temperature, RAID consistency, SMART tests, ...) and good status information

    - Positive: Easy configuration of RAIDs & Volumes

    - Negative: Proprietary, instable ext4 implementation/configuration (errors even on a freshly installed QNAP, not fully compatible with linux, even on external drives)

    - Negative: Proprietary LVM2 format for Thin/Thick provisoning (not recoverable with Linux)

    - Negative: Filesystem check doesn't check read only, but it's repairing immediatly without comment

    - Negative: Static volume also uses LVM

    - Negative: Internal drives use a salted encryption key (cannot easily being unlocked with other devices)

Storage & Snapshot - What would be the top 3 expected function in the forum that you also recommend to add regarding storage management functions?

    - Data robustness on power loss (currently, ext4 fs reports meta data errors, in spite of journaling file system

    - ext4 linux compatiblitly mode at least for external drives

    - backup for all data: albums, play lists, timemachine backups, ...

Storage & Snapshot - In what kind of usage scenario are users asking about Snapshot protection? Is there any specified requirement on recover point/time be mentioned?

    - performing a backup in background (needs a non-moving source)

    - undelete files or recovering a directory structure, e.g. after wrongly done file moves
    - required recovering point: restoring after buggy firmware update - might be difficult as payload data should not be rolled back

Storage & Snapshot - What solutions have the forum users decided to use for expanding their storage capacity or reduce the usage size? Have they encountered any challenge?

    - 2-Bay RAID1: Usually I insert two bigger disks into the NAS and use the old disks as backup

    - challenge 1: move the data from the former internal disks to the new ones

    - challange 2: convert the former internal disks into two external backup drives - without the need of deleting the data on it (deletion means a gap with no data on the backup and a lot of time for performing the first backup)

    - challange: new volumes are bigger than each single backup drive: backup must be distributed over multiple backup drives

Q'center - What do you think if users would buy the idea of moving the Q'center to the cloud and using it as an IOT service? Is most NAS in business still seperated from Internet?- The main purpose of my NAS is to be independent from the internet clouds - I would not use any kind of commericial (or even unencrypted) cloud feature

Music Station - For Hi-Fi (common) users, what other features they expect that Music Station could provide?

    - Not knowing the music station so far: I'd like functions that solve the problem that sometimes I want a ballade, somtimes a party hit and so on. Maybe something like tags "party", "ballade", "dance" ...?

    - Exportable Play Lists (if not already available)

Container Station - What are some commen user scenarios for NAS user to need/use Container Station?

    - Developing/maintaining an own server application

Security - Which security issues would QNAP NAS users are most concerned?

    - Protection against hardware thiefs (data encryption for ALL user data)

    - internet connections made by the NAS, that were not explicitly configured/accepted by the user (location search, queries, updates ...)

Security - Which security features would QNAP need to enhance, eg security scan, firewall?

    - Unlocking the encrypted volume automatically by a key that is NOT stored inside the NAS itself

    - Suggestion 1: unlocking by USB stick

    - Suggestion 2, preferred: downloading the key from an URL using TLS with mutual authentication (the server may whitelist the requesters address)

Backup - What Features would you expect for future releases?

    - Initiating a previously configured, archiving (!) backup by connecting the backup device via USB and pressing the "copy" button at the front of the device

Backup - What Features would you expect for future releases ?

    • Simple rotating scheduled USB Media Backup ( like Windows SBS )
      • Create External USB backupjob -> mount media (try, when using schedule) -> run backup -> unmount media -> medium can be safeley swapped during non backup times
      • having versioning also for external backup jobs
    • Systemwide, centralized Backupmanager / Wizard for App Data ( at least QNAP Apps like Notes Station, Photostation etc. )
      • all Apps implement a generic interface to be able to backup / restore their data on request. E.g. BackupData, RestoreData, VerifyData
      • Apps register themselves on the Backupmanager and can then selected for Backup
      • Backup interface should be open for 3rd Party developers
      • integrated into hybrid backup
    • Systemwide backup of all system related configuration data ( shares, users, AD, network etc.)
      • ideally a full system (bare metal) backup / restore ( like Microsoft SBS )

That means it should be possible to have a one click backup of all relevant system, app and user data without thinking about 20 places were to backup. Especially before a firmware update takes place. In case updates fail the system can be completely restored with one click from backup. E.g. an integrated Clonezilla or Bacula like solution.

    • Containerized / Encrypted Backups ( like Duplicati e.g.)
      • afaik all backupschemes are completely transparent and file based
      • it would be nice to have also a scheme, which creates compressed chunks like duplicati which also are probably better to handle with cloud backups
      • direct integration of duplicati would be nice
    • RSync
      • allowing different RSync user to avoid system wide access with only one rsync user which has ( to my knowlegde) complete access to all shares regardless of ACL settings.

File Station - What are the most expected features regarding to File Station? :

    • directly open text files (Logs, Configs, Source) in the internal Texteditor as option. Editor should decide wether it can be displayed.
    • Search for Duplicates ( maybe also a Task for QFiling ? )
    • an option to burn ISO images directly to an attached USB DVD / BR recorder for archival reasons would be very nice. Preferrably with speed limitation to improve writing quality.
    • create an ISO image of a set of folders and write it to an attached USB DVD / BR recorder.

Qsirch - What are the most expected features regarding to Qsirch?:

    • excplicit selection of places to be indexed instead of excluding a load of places which are bloating the index and taking resources directly when starting the service
    • better filter options to exclude filetypes / folders ( extensions, sizes )
    • making use of all available metadata, maybe also from certain apps like Photostation face detection or GPS infos. But also all other kinds of metadata like IDv2 tags or other tagging schemes provided in documents or media data

QSirch - What do you think about Qsirch provide type filter for document files?(For example, categorizes as Business report, product introduction, travel plan etc.)? Anything you would suggest to this feature?:

    • would be quite nice
    • extended search should be placed more prominent
    • using multiple search / document categories should be possible in simple search field ( currently only one category can be selected to my knowlegde)
    • is there a search syntax available in search field like: "contains:"word" type:pdf from:yyyy-mm-dd to:yyyy-mm-dd not:otherword
    • being able to control systemload / indexing schedules etc.

    Photo Station -

What is the main reason for the users to use Photo Station? (For example, browsing photos with families, managing private photos, sharing photos to customers, etc.):

    • it is a great server based solution for handling pictures from all devices. It's developing into a kind of server based Picasa, which was quite great for organizing locally until Google aquired it
    • But keep in mind:
      • Providing such an powerful application with a lot of editing options means that people invest a great amount of time and work organzing and tagging etc. their pictures.
      • This means, a comprehensive Backup / Restore / Export function must exist being able to preserve the work in case of DB corruption and other glitches

Photo Station - Do users who usually organize photos with folders also want to use facial recognition or other AI features (location and things recognition)?

    • Facial recognition is a great feature that I really liked on Picasa. It is a great plus if an search option would exist like "all photos with Aunt Annie from:yyyy-mm-dd" Ideally combined with an GPS search.
    • Backup / Restore Option is crucial. Ideally also a kind of "contact sheet" export of all faces would be nice

Photo Station - Do users want location albums or map view (based on image GPS information to create automatically)?:

    • would be a great plus. At least, a combined search for all metadata like Persons, Objects, GPS, Time can help to organize media in a very flexible way without having to much effort.

Container Station - What are some commen user scenarios for NAS user to need/use Container Station?:

    • having a mostly system agnostic solution for apps provided from e.g. other app vendors like bitnami.
    • hosting common apps like wikis, issue tracker or other productivity solutions in a transparent way with full control of all data and configuration issues
    • simple development environment

Q'center - What do you think if users would buy the idea of moving the Q'center to the cloud and using it as an IOT service? Is most NAS in business still seperated from Internet?

    • bad idea: sensible monitoring data should not be stored on centralized servers which are not under control of the owner
    • such a function should be always optional and provide also an internal reporting only switch

Notes Station 3 & Qnotes 3 - What are the improvements in Notes Station 3 that most of the users want to have? :

    • since it is similar to OneNote, a comprehensive Backup / Restore option is crucial. At least in a system / admin manageable and automated way.
    • Backups should provide a human readable export option

Storage & Snapshot - What is the top 3 reasons you saw new users considering buying a NAS, and more specified a QNAP NAS? :

    • Top 1: having an easy usable device to safely store all kinds of data ( photos, music, videos, documents ) locally in a controllable and bulletproof manner.
    • Top 2: data security / integrity must be maintained under all circumstances ( Snapshots are very nice but not widely understood )
    • Top 3: having an application server to maintain / organize data family / small business wide without having too much hassle with configuration issues. QNAPs have meanwhile evolved from simple storage to fully fleged application servers and they are more and more used (and promoted) like that which is currently not really reflected by stability and backup functions. Especially when reliability and robustness is needed in business cases.

Storage & Snapshot - What would be the top 3 expected function in the forum that you also recommend to add regarding storage management functions?

    • Top 1. : Volume resizing ! You are not able to shrink a e.g. thin volume when you converted a share to a snapshot share and made it to big.
    • Top 2. : Better view wich storage pools are residing on which disks
    • Top 3. : having support to filesystems which can prevent bitrot which is getting more likely due to increasing size of hdds.

    Storage & Snapshot -

In what kind of usage scenario are users considering deploy SSD with QNAP in your forum? Which type (SATA/M.2/PCIe) and which functions (Cache/Tier/All Flash) are their chose?:

    • SSD only is mostly used for the system volume and especially when using VM / Container apps which cause usually a high IOPS load
    • SSD Caching is a nice option to increase throughput
    • QTier should be hidden on smaller NAS devices since it only gives a performance plus on bigger setups with 16+ disks...

Security - Which security issues would QNAP NAS users are most concerned? :

    • data corruption by malware ( on NAS or connected devices )
    • exposing data to non authorized users
    • data corruption by filesystem / storage device errors ( bitrot etc.)
    • data which leaves the NAS without notice. That also includes any services / apps which use external cloud services for processing. I want to manage my data on my own and want to decide, whether I allow any external processing. This is a must!

Security - Which security features would QNAP need to enhance, eg security scan, firewall? :

    • on demand scanner. Backend option to use services like VirusTotal to have a broader view on different scan engines
    • simple overview of all network connections / services currently active

    Edit2:

Ist ja doch schon eine ganz schön lange "wünsch Dir was Liste" geworden...

  • Hii QNAP Team

Backup - What Features would you expect for future releases ?

    - diffrent version of a backup in the cloud (for example: Amazon Glacier)

    Best regards
    Cyril

3 Mal editiert, zuletzt von KuHnYx ()

  • Backup - What Features would you expect for future releases ?

-"One click" backup. I mean that one simply selects the folder to be backed up, the backup medium selects and the tool automatically creates the appropriate folder. In addition, all user settings and apps should also be secured in the backup.

"On click" restore would be just as nice.

Security - Which security issues would QNAP NAS users are most concerned?

    - Data that is sent without my knowledge. For example, the use of any Google services or eternal pinging the Qnapserver.
    - Data loss due to defective file system because the reboot did not work.

  • Backup: (I don't understand the meaning of "How about backup appliance market")

    • else see nasferatus new wishlist
    • I completely ditched the hybrid backup station, because Duplicati offers SFTP support and encrypted incremental backups, which I'm able to restore on a third party device independent of QNAP. None offers QNAP natively.

Photo Station: Main Reason to use:

    • Browsing photos

    Photo Station: Facial recognition:

    • Not used, because its recognition is poor, cumbersome to use, not possible to add faces manually and, most importantly, the recognized faces aren’t stored in the images.
    • Adobe Lightroom offers much better facial recognition (facial recognition + person suggestion) than the photo station and incorporates the informations in the images using XMP.
    • QNAP should do the same, and stay compatible with Adobe Lightroom which is the best in this class, else it’s just a waste of time to classify faces in a locked down app (Photostation) which doesn’t allow me to use the informations on other apps and computers, independent of QNAP, later.

    Photo Station: Folder view:

    • Yes. I organize my images in folders by date and event and use folders to view specific images of specific events at specific dates.

Photo Station: Do users who usually organize photos with folders also want to use facial recognition or other AI features (location and things recognition)?:

    • Yes

    Photo Station: Gallery mode:

    • To get an overview of all photos.
    • To search for a specific image.
    • To sort them by tags, based on the face recognition done with Adobe Lightroom.
    • However, images with incorrect or missing creation time stamps distort the gallery mode and break its use. There should be advanced options to correct this, like "if EXIF informations are missing":
      • Option 1: interpret date from folder by user inputed custom python regular expression, e.g. my folders are "yyyy.mm.dd event", so a reg ex could be "^(\d*.\d*.\d*)" )
      • Option 2a: else take date of creation (won't work most of the time)
      • Option 2b: else add it to 'no date' category'

    Photo Station: GPS:

    • I don't have a use for it, because my photos lack GPS information.

Notes Station 3: What are the improvements in Notes Station 3 that most of the users want to have?

    • Centralized automatic backup of all notes from all accounts
    • Task list (like shopping list) with integration in the Android App.
    • Ability to import Webpages, like Evernote Webclipper
    • Project timeline, like Office Timeline, would be cool to have :)
    • More comfortable editor
      • pasting text from a plain texteditor in Notes Station 3 is a pain and doesn't work properly with the paragraph
      • custom font selection
      • improved code block
      • changing paragraph between 'Paragraph' and 'Code' and back has problems with line breaks and their distance, it just breaks them. Paragraph supports both return and shift+return, code doesn't differentiate between them, yet, when converting a return from paragraph to code the lines have a gap, fixing it with removing and adding a line break again and then converting it back to paragraph removes the line break completely.

Security: Which security features would QNAP need to enhance, eg security scan, firewall?

    • Two factor authentification for direct web access to the File Station and Photo Station, too, if enabled in QTS.
  • Installation and Update:

Why pre-installed apps, which are not needed, can not be uninstalled or deselected during an update process?

  • Hello Qnap,

Backup - What features would you expect for future releases?

    - configurable versioning of (Google Drive-)cloud-backups

Container Station - What are some common user scenarios for NAS user to need/use Container Station?

    - maintaining own server applications (currently used for mailserver, webserver and PostgreSQL)

Virtualization Station - What are some common user scenarios for NAS user to need/use Virtualization Station?

    - maintaining Urbackup-server with real incremental-forever-backup-support using BTRFS

Virtualization Station - What features would you expect for future releases?

    - update underlying Qemu-layer more often to get for example support for dirty-bitmap-feature of newer version

    - real incremental backup of virtual machines while running

Appcenter - What Features do you expect from future releases ?

    • Better App Resource Management, which means
      • better overview of the needed resources from an App ( not only RAM, but also CPU load etc.) Probably a kind of credit system is needed which could show the user, how much resources are left after installing / activating certain apps. Maybe an option to auto limit the number of parallel running apps depending on the available system resources.
      • maybe a App integrated mechanism to schedule CPU intensive tasks
      • extending the apps to supporting natively the resource management by scheduling as shown in QBoost. To my understanding, apps are started / stopped rather the "hard" way which may causes rather problems when using the schedule. I had problems starting / stopping QSirch when it was indexing

Appcenter - What Features do you expect from future releases ?

    • when updating any App, an automated Backup / Rollback function would be very nice in case of problems with the newer version

Backup - What Features would you expect for future releases ?

    • Simple rotating scheduled jobs for all targets ( FTP, SMB etc.)

      • Rotating scheme like 3 folders, 2 incremental, one full. At the moment this can only partly simulated by creating separate jobs for each folder which is error prone

Resourcemonitor - What Features would you expect for future releases ?

    • possibility to kill abnormal running processes (which happened on my system multiple times when shutting down Qsirch / Container station with a 50% python process...) without the need to log in via ssh to console. Of course with an extra guard / expert view to prevent accidential kills by "normal users".
    • Alternatively a web console to issue commands directly like in Webmin

  • Backup

    How about backup appliance market?

    • I only use RTRR-Backup for saving single shares to external USB backup HDD.
    • Since I need full IMAGES for quick emergency rebuilds of PCs/Laptops/Macs, I use the NAS only as backup storage for the client-side Acronis Backup software. Would be really great, if QNAP NAS could do this job by itself. But then it also had to be STABLE and RELIABLE (trust in this is really at the bottom within the community at the moment beacuse of the latest series of disastrous firmware updates).

    File Station

How do you see "shared with me" feature? Would you use it? Would user use it? In what scenarios?

    • I personally don't like all this gimmick style features, so I also don't like "share with me". All the components/apps do primarily have to be stable and secure. So what I really liked was the the link function for shares from other NAS. I used it to connect a low performance media NAS to a high performance Intel i7 NAS running PLEX Media Server on it. But although the PLEX NAS shows the connected share in File Station, I always have to KLICK on that share (open it) in File Station manually first, so that PLEX recognizes the share from the media NAS (otherwise error "media not connected"). So: great function but maybe has to be fixed in the way, that File Station starts an active access by itself after starting/connecting.

    Storage & Snapshot

What is the top 3 reasons you saw new users considering buying a NAS, and more specified a QNAP NAS?

    • 3 reasons: build quality, realibility, expandability
    • But sadly relibility has gone bad in case of firmware. Way too many BAD updates or even withdrawn ones. That's an absolute no go and quite some system vendors and professional users have told me that they won't use/sell/buy QNAP NAS anymore or even switch to other brands. They all weren't happy because of the good build quality and hardware specs, but a NAS primarily has to be stable/reliable and secure. So it would be best to bring stability/reliability and with that data security back again, before asking the community for the top10 of further gimmick stuff.

What latest storage functions in 4.3.4 have forum users discussed most? (RAID50/60, Snapshot Support ARM, Snapshot Replica, Qtier 2.0 etc)

    • The new storage functions of 3.4.3 are all good, but many people can't use them because of the bad quality of the firmware. Data loss, reboots, other errors, rollbacks... On productive systems I have to stay at stable 4.3.3 until 4.3.4 is getting stable and reliable. Not easy to wait but all the good new features are no use if the system is not stable and there even is data loss of business data.
    • The QNAP expansion cards program was good before, the new cards are awesome! Right direction. I'm already curious which data transfer rates are possible with a 6 disc i7 NAS via 10 GbE... and maybe M.2 SSD cache disc. Also hope, that letency then dropps significantly. Those flexible expansion options are a huge plus for QNAP, keep on doing so!

    Q'center

In what kind of usage scenario have you saw the forum users use centerial managmeent solution for the NAS? What is the solution and how many NAS they have?

    • Q'center is quite helpful for centralized monitoring of NAS workloads and details. All in all it has developed to a really nice app and it's a must have if there are more NAS to monitor.
    • 2-3 NAS (could be done within the separate NAS at this small count, but it's just well-arranged, clear and therefore comfortable and fast)

What would be the expected function you saw on the forum in which you also recommend to add regarding Q'center?

    • Extended management features would be nice, so what about user management? Right now there is only an 'online user' overview.

    QRM+

    • QRM+ is quite helpful for centralized monitoring of client workloads (incl. VMs) and details. It's easy to implement and worked failure-free until now for me. Management options for client systems could be extended further.

Download Station, Music Station, Photo Station, OceanKTV

    • I don't use any of those stations. They do not fit to a NAS in professional use.

    OceanKTV

What is the usage of OceanKTV? Is the usage rate high or low? / What may the reasons that cause the usage rate is low? Too annoyed to import songs? The interface is too hard to use? They do not have this hobby to sing Karaoke?

    • A karaoke station on a NAS is really an eastern thing and absolutely nothing for the european market (well, it's not a negative thing, just senseless for the typical European).

    Security

Which security features would QNAP need to enhance, eg security scan, firewall?

    • Security Scan and Firewall would be great if it would be absolutely reliable (error-free!) and informative, so that users know what's happening and why. Many complex firewalls are not quite easy to look through quickly and that mustn't be in this case (time is money).

Which security issues would QNAP NAS users are most concerned?

    • (Not only) I'm most concerned about the fact, that older firmwares don't get security fixes. So 4.3.4 ist safer than 4.3.3 on security side - but so buggy, that many users simply HAVE to use 4.3.3 - with all the open security issues then. The solution would be to support those branches separately (and maybe only) for security issues. Of course the absolutely best would be a dramatic increase in firmware quality at all so that one could use new firmwares early without the risk of corrupting productive systems.

    Storage & Snapshot

    - What would be the top 3 expected function in the forum that you also recommend to add regarding storage management functions?

    • shrink volumes should be possible
    • moving volumes between storage pools
    • non-destructive filesystem check

    Q'Center

    - What function in Q'center did you saw that forum users had surprise (postiive) or pain (negative) with?

    • no integration/communication with QRM+

-What would be the expected function you saw on the forum in which you also recommend to add regarding Q'center?

    • integration or reporting with QRM+
    • configuration and monitoring of backups jobs
    • adjustable reporting intervall for the connected NAS (hourly, daily, every X hours)

-What do you think if users would buy the idea of moving the Q'center to the cloud and using it as an IOT service? Is most NAS in business still seperated from Internet?

    • only optional. The local installation must stay possible!

    Backup

    - What Features would you expect for future releases ?

    • sftp as source and target, push and pull!
    • more, better and flexible time planning options (in one backup job)
      • i.e. mo - fr, daily at 06:00am, 12:00am, 20:00pm - do nothing at the weekend
    • flexible reporting possibilities
      • daily report for all backups
      • different mail receivers
    • better compability with rsync on non-QNAP devices
    • possibility to pull backups using rsync from "external" devices
    • "full backup" of the whole NAS (including at least official QNAP APPs) to be prepared for a disaster recovery.
    • better UI for the Hybrid Backup Sync, there is not enough information using the actual overview.
    • rotating schemes i.e.:
      • full backup starting fridays
      • incremential/differential mo-fr
      • rotating weekly or every two weeks and so on

    QRM+

Feature requests - the actual version is just a nice toy for SMB

    • needs possibility to monitor QNAP NAS or to communicate with Q'Center
    • SNMP support for other devices (switches, routers, printers...)

So u.a. "What Features would you expect for future releases?" da speziell dieser Punkt sehr oft genannt wurde, habe ich diesen als extra Punkt aufgenommen ;)

  • Hallo,

    was mir fehlt:

    Virtualisation Station

    Virtualisation Station

The possibility to give a normal user of the NAS in the Virtualisation Station admin rights.

    Grüße
